Located in the Flemish part of Belgium, only 30 min drive from Brussels and 2 hours from Paris and London, this magnificent property is an extraordinary example of the late 18th century architecture. Build in 1785 and completely refurbished by the actual owner, the castle is surrounded by a 13,5 ha park, designed by German landscape gardener Hirschfeld. It is a small but very elegant country house on top of a hill in a romantic English landscape park. It includes sweeps of gently rolling lawns set against groves of trees and pituresque architecture to form an idyllic pastoral landscape. The castle itself, was designed by the French architect Gilles Barnabé Guimard de Larabe (1734-1805), apprentice of Jacques-Anges Gabriel, the architect of the Petit Trianon, one of the subsidiary structures of the Palace of Versailles. This inspired Guimard. The Castle of Wannegem-Lede is a fine neoclassical design, strongly reminiscent to Versailles' Petit Trianon. It was Guimard's most important private commission as his main activity concerned important architectural and urbanistic projects such as the Place Royale in Brussels and the new Palace of the Council of Brabant which today houses the Belgian Parliament.
