The lowveld area located around Hoedspruit celebrates a rich cultural heritage and at many archaeological sites the mysteries of the past are still being discovered. Historians reveal that the first black Africans moved across the great Limpopo river before 300 AD. The Voortrekkers arrived in the Limpopo region in the early nineteenth century and numerous battles between the indigenous African people and the Voortrekkers took place. Thereafter during the apartheid regime of the National Party, portions of the land in Limpopo were subdivided into what then became known as 'homeland' areas. Happily, today the Limpopo province is united in its aim to offer the best possible welcome to everyone who visits this spectacular region of South Africa, with the town of Hoedspruit positioned in the midst of it all.

The northern section of the Kruger National Park which is located in the Limpopo province, is renowned for its massive herds of elephant and buffalo, significant numbers of tsessebe and sable and also rich in bird life. On the park's western border, superb privately owned game reserves and lodges offer visitors luxurious, air-conditioned accommodation and day and night game viewing in open 4x4 vehicles.

Hoedspruit, gateway to the various game lodges, the Timbavati Game Reserve and the Kruger National Park, was proclaimed as town and then laid out as an establishment in 1869.

Hoedspruit is one of the country’s premier eco-tourist destinations for visitors to the local game lodges and private reserves. Abutting the Kruger National Park, Hoedspruit is thus surrounded by beautiful, game-rich countryside and is imbued with a distinctive rural charm.

Tourism facilities, within Hoedspruit, centre around Game Lodges, Safaris and other "Big 5" activities as well as birding, hikes and safaris.

The Lowveld, world-famous for its big five game population and many other types of spectacular sightings, is also home to considerably more than half of the total species of more than 800 Southern African birds.

Hoedspruit is also the junction where the 60km branch railway line from the mining town of Phalaborwa joins the Kaapmuiden-Soekmekaar line. The airforce base near Hoedspruit was transformed to the civilian Eastgate Airport to provide quick access to the various game reserves.
