The choice of activities are as varied as the landscape. With 120 km's of shoreline washed by the warm Indian Ocean, watersports activities dominate with world-class scuba diving reefs, angling, swimming and surfing at the top of the list.

For those who enjoy swinging a club, the South Coast known as the Golf Coast boasts a number of world-renowned golf courses with spectacular sea views and memorable 19th holes. They are Umkomaas, Scottburgh, Umdoni, Selborne, Port Shepstone, Margate, Southbroom, San Lameer, Port Edward and Wild Coast Golf Course.

The title of a "Blue Flag" beach is the prestigious award that is given to beaches across the world that meets standards of excellence in safety, amenities, cleanliness and environmental standards. It has been awarded to eight South African beaches, four of which are down the Hibiscus Coast, namely Hibberdene Beach, Ramsgate Beach, Marina beach/San Lameer, and Lucien.  South Africa is furthermore the first Country outside Europe to win Blue Flag accreditation, which is an assurance to visitors of a clean, safe and environmentally friendly experience and the South Coast is proud to be the national leader in this regard!

There are several nature reserves that occur in this territory all teeming with a variety of birds and small mammals, from the tiny Duiker to Wildebeest and Zebra. The region is therefore a popular destination for birders, with 386 recorded species including such jewels as the Knysna Loerie, Narina Trogon and the distinctive African Fish Eagle.

If you travel inland the landscape changes dramatically to rolling hills, steep gorges, rushing rivers and indigenous forests. Here you will find scattered villages where the people enjoy a traditional rural lifestyle make home-made crafts using natural materials and wave a welcome to strangers.

The people of the KwaZulu Natal South Coast are as colorful and diverse as the landscape, and the blend of cultures includes strong African, Indian and European influences. They are friendly and laid-back - some say too laid back - and they know how to enjoy life. Visitors are made to feel welcome and slip easily into the relaxed, carefree, outdoor lifestyle that the South Coast is famous for.

Shad fishing is best around late June & July when the annual sardine migration takes place bringing shoals of fish close in-shore and provide sharks, game fish, marine mammals and birds with a feeding frenzy.

Access to the South Coast is easy - and safe. The N2 freeway which runs north to south the entire 120 km's of coastline means that you can get out of the rat race and onto the coast in a easy, one-hour's drive from Durban.

Travelling south along the Indian Ocean visible through the verdant, sub-tropical vegetation on your left and the undulating hills of KwaZulu-Natal on your right, you are about to enter a world-famous holiday zone with a string of vibrant seaside holiday towns overlooking glorious golden beaches, lagoons and inter-linking bays.

The bustling seaside village of Hibberdene with its beach markets is the first of the South Coast's world renowned Blue Flag beaches.

Umtentweni is named after the Umtentweni River, which takes its name from the spiky grass growing on its banks. Places of interest are Shaka's Rock and the Mgazi Stream swamp forest.

Visit the Port Shepstone lighthouse situated on the southern side of the mouth of the Umzimkulu River. Mzumbe, Sunwich Port, Anerley, Southport and Banana Beach are resorts that form part of Port Shepstone.

The spectacular Oribi Gorge, about 25km inland from Port Shepstone, is one of the known beauty spots.

The magnificent gorge is carved out of sandstone over the Mzimkulwana River and approximately 27km long and 1km at its widest point. The edge of the gorge has been turned into an extreme sport hotspot and offers adrenalin junkies a selection of activities ranging from abseiling and the world's highest gorge swing which slides 160 metres above the gorge floor alongside a waterfall. White water rafting with 3 grade rapids is offered in the rainy season when the river is full. After a bird's-eye view of the gorge, it's time to take a closer look at its wealth of natural beauty by visiting the Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve.

Shelly Beach has become a thriving dive centre because of its close proximity to the Protea Banks and the ski-boat launch from the small craft harbour. Operators take groups of divers out to the Banks situated seven kilometers off-shore. This is one finest shark dive sites in the world with many species including ragged tooth, Zambezi, Hammerheads, Tigers, Black Tips and the occasional Great White. The fishing along this coast is legendary, both off the rocks and beaches and from ski-boats which launch from Shelly Beach. Shelly Beach boasts two large shopping complexes, namely the Shelly Centre and the South Coast Mall. The Shelly Centre has 114 shops of varied nature, cinema's, restaurants, etc. The South Coast Mall many large franchise stores and some great restaurants. This is where you will find our Engel & Völkers shop.

St. Michaels-on-Sea is another excellent swimming beach but it is specially noted for the excellent surfing waves which wrap around the rocky point and sweep into the bay, creating fast, down-the-line tubes. Surfer's nirvana playing host to local surfers and boogie boarders. Their quest is the perfect wave and with one of the best point breaks in SA when the south westerly blows. 'St Mikes' is where it all happens!

Uvongo is famous for its waterfall that plunges 23m down into the lagoon forming one of the deepest lagoons in the country and the huge rock escarpment, dense with foliage that shelters the beach Alongside the river runs a foot path which leads to the Uvongo River Nature Reserve. Hawkers can be found on the beach selling their fruit, basketry and craft. A children's paddling pool is situated on the grassy banks shaded by trees.

The beauty of Margate is that you can stroll to the main shopping district in your beach gear and do a bit of shopping in one of the many interesting craft shops and boutiques, or get a bite to eat and a nice cold drink. The beach offers festive holiday programmes during season with beauty pageants, musical concerts, and lots of fun for the whole family to enjoy. There is an amusement park, Olympic size fresh water pool and a 'milelong' beach with expanse of sand to play beach games. At night Margate becomes alive with pavement cafes, restaurants, bars, clubs and discos doing a roaring trade. A Mardi Gras and music concerts featuring top local artists are held on Margate beach in season, and the New Year's Eve Parties are unforgettable with thousands having the time of their lives.

Ramsgate previously named the Blue Lagoon is a quaint, relaxed little place with holiday cottages and B&Bs. Its beach offers braai and picnic facilities in a park like setting shaded by enormous trees and offering a peaceful haven for those who enjoy the quieter life. Tuck into an exotic seafood meal at the little restaurant situated on the beachfront or simply enjoy an evening sundowner whilst watching the dolphins go by as the African moon rises.

Southbroom, an up-market, predominantly residential and retirement village set in a cool and peaceful sub-tropical jungle alongside a deep lagoon. The beach is protected by a rocky point and offers great swimming and surfing conditions. Marina Beach is also a resort in the Southbroom area.

San Lameer is a self contained development boasting an exclusive hotel and 500 luxury villas. Much of the surroundings are impeccably landscaped, but the estate does include a rare swamp forest leading to the sand dunes.

Trafalgar's holiday cottages and caravan park lead to another sweeping golden beach, but in this case also a Marine Reserve. The reserve incorporates two kilometers of shoreline and reached 500 metres out to sea, giving protection to rich and valuable fossil beds dating back some 90 million years. Snorkeling is very popular here and the wind direction often creates ideal conditions for sail-boarding.

Keep an eye out for interesting farm stalls and local crafters as the scenic countryside unfolds while driving through Munster, Palm Beach, Glenmore Beach and Leisure Bay. A ski-boat launch site is based at Glenmore Beach.

Port Edward is the last stop on the South Coast. Situated on the Umtamvuna River Lagoon and surrounded by the Umtamvuna Nature Reserve, banana plantations, sugar cane farms and the rather unusual "red desert". Visit the North Sands Bluff lighthouse and the maritime museum. The beach provides swimming and a popular skiboat launch. This is a famous fishing destination, both deep sea and off the rocks. Across the river is the Wild Coast Casino.

Come and visit us to experience the South Coast, and you will know that you have touched and seen the real paradise.

You only live once............. we'll show you where.  On the South Coast!
