Zahara de los Atunes is one of the most evocative stretches of coastline in Andalusia thanks to its unspoiled landscape, its crystal-clear waters, its shore of fine golden sand, its people, its cuisine, and so many other charms. Located in a privileged spot on the coast of Cádiz, this small town stands out for its many attractions, which for centuries have drawn civilizations, tourists, and visitors to behold the treasures offered to anyone willing to open mind and heart and, of course, to fall in love with this beautiful corner of our geography.  Set at the foot of the Sierra del Retín and at the mouth of the Cachón River, the Atlantic Ocean washes every centimeter of its rugged, virtually untouched coastline.  It borders Barbate, its sister town, and the ancient city of Tarifa, and lies just 73 kilometers from Cádiz, the provincial capital, and 177 from Seville. This privileged location gives it a Mediterranean climate with mild temperatures, an invitation to visit the town at any time of year. The town’s name comes from tuna fishing using the almadraba, a traditional fishing method already used in Roman times. Although today the main business is tourism, some fishermen still work in early summer, during this species’ migration season. Its main attraction is the vast 8-kilometer beach, spared from the onslaught of rampant development that ravages the rest of Andalusia. However, between Zahara and Tarifa lies Atlanterra, one of the most exclusive luxury-tourism areas in Cádiz. Other notable beaches in the town are Canillo and Pajares and Atlanterra, the latter being the one that has seen the most building.
