Carnaxide is one of the oldest documented lands in Portugal. It was a former parish of the municipality of Oeiras. The name Carnaxide may be derived from the Arabic word "carna-axide," meaning "hill of red earth," suggesting that Carnaxide was inhabited during the Muslim invasion.
