Location: Fontenay-sous-Bois, Île-de-France

The Bois de Vincennes is located east of Paris. It is a remnant of the ancient forest belt that surrounded Lutetia, whose name first appeared in a document from the Abbey of Saint-Maur in 847. Owned by the Church, and then by the kings of France until 1791, the history of the woods is closely linked to the château. For a long time, it was prized for royal hunts.

It was not until after the Revolution that it was classified as national property. It served as a military training ground throughout the 19th century and into the Second Empire, when, under the direction of Napoleon III and his engineer Alphand, the woods were extensively landscaped. In 1960, André Malraux classified them as a site of natural scenic beauty.

Covering 995 hectares, mostly woodland, it is the largest green space in Paris. It offers a wide variety of landscapes and atmospheres and contains four lakes, around which numerous activities take place, as well as a broad range of activities for sports enthusiasts, including four fitness trails for outdoor training.

  • Lac Daumesnil, the largest, located at the western end of the woods, contains two islands, Île de Reuilly and Île de Bercy, accessible by bridges. Near its banks are the Vincennes Pagoda and the Tibetan Buddhist temple.
  • Lac de Gravelle, located in the southeast;
  • Lac des Minimes, in the northeast, contains three islands, including Île de la Porte Jaune;
  • Lac de Saint-Mandé is located in the northwest.

These lakes are connected by streams that cross the forest plots and form scenic walking routes.

Two of the four sites comprising the City of Paris Botanical Garden are located in the Bois de Vincennes: the Paris Floral Park and the Paris Arboretum. The lesser-known Tropical Agronomy Garden is nearby.
