Location: Fontenay-sous-Bois, Île-de-France

The Bois de Vincennes lies to the east of Paris. It is a vestige of the ancient forest belt that surrounded Lutetia, whose name first appears in a document from the Abbey of Saint-Maur in 847. Owned by the Church, then by the kings of France until 1791, the history of the wood is closely linked to that of the château. It was long prized for its royal hunting grounds. Only after the French Revolution was it classified as national property. It served as a maneuvering ground throughout the 19th century until the Second Empire, when, under the impetus of Napoleon III and his engineer Alphand, the wood was extensively developed and classified as a picturesque natural site in 1960 by André Malraux. With a surface area of 995 hectares, mainly wooded, it is the largest green space in Paris. It offers a wide range of landscapes and atmospheres, and features four lakes around which numerous activities take place, as well as a wide range of activities for sports enthusiasts, including four sports courses for outdoor training. - Lac Daumesnil, the larger lake at the western end of the wood, has two islands, Ile de Reuilly and Ile de Bercy, accessible by bridges. Near its banks are the Pagode de Vincennes and the Tibetan Buddhist temple. - Lac de Gravelle, to the southeast, - Lac des Minimes, to the northeast, features three islands, including Porte Jaune; - Lac de Saint-Mandé, to the north-west. These lakes are linked by rivers that run through the forested plots, providing picturesque walking routes. Two of the four sites of the Jardin botanique de la Ville de Paris are located in the Bois de Vincennes: the Parc floral de Paris and the Arboretum de Paris. The lesser-known Jardin d'Agronomie Tropicale is next door.
