Localisation : Villafranca di Verona, Vénétie
A historic borderland and Borgo Libero (Free Zone) of what was once known as the Kingdom of Lombardy–Venetia, Villafranca di Verona is today a highly regarded town thanks to its strategic location, excellent connections to all major transport routes, and its close proximity to the provincial capital, Verona. Mantua is equally nearby, approximately 23 kilometers away. Lake Garda, with its long beaches and the town center of Peschiera del Garda, can be reached in just 18 km. Villafranca is the largest town in the extensive province of Verona, covering an area of 57 square kilometers and comprising seven districts. Its history tells of chivalric events and the passage of illustrious figures, among whom Gabriele D’Annunzio deserves special mention. In the historic Caffè Fantoni, he left a dedication in 1921 to the “Acqua di Fiume” spirit distilled by the café’s owner. Noteworthy historical events include the signing of the Armistice of Villafranca on July 11, 1859, between Napoleon III and Emperor Franz Joseph I, which took place at Palazzo Morelli Bugna—now Palazzo Bottagisio and home to the Museum of the Risorgimento. A mention must also be made of the Scaligero Castle, dating back to 1185, originally built to protect the entrance to what was once the town center and famously referenced in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The town developed longitudinally along Viale Postumia and Via Mantovana, routes that still connect Verona and Mantua today. Events and traditions such as the Antique Market, the Feast of Saint Peter with its spectacular fireworks set to music, concerts, and cultural events bring vibrancy and life to the area. All essential services are easily accessible, and public transport further strengthens the connection with Verona. Highlights include the Nicolis Museum and the Alida Ferrarini Theatre, named after the renowned soprano who was born in Villafranca. Villafranca is also home to the Valerio Catullo International Airport and to major national and international companies that have established their headquarters in the area. The nearest motorway exits on the A4 Milan–Venice route are Sommacampagna (approx. 7 km) and Verona South (approx. 13.5 km), while on the A22 motorway, Nogarole Rocca (approx. 10 km) and Verona North (approx. 14 km) are conveniently close. Villafranca di Verona is therefore a well-rounded town, offering an ideal place to live, appreciate local traditions, and enjoy the completeness of all essential services.
