    Locatie: Florence, Toscane

Piazzale Michelangelo in Florence is the most famous viewpoint for observing the city's panorama, featured on countless postcards and a must-see destination for tourists visiting the city. It was built in 1869 based on the design by architect Giuseppe Poggi on a hill just south of the historic center, as part of the redevelopment of the left bank of the Arno. At that time, Florence had become the capital of Italy, and the entire city was undergoing an urban renewal process, known as the Risanamento, or the city's bourgeois rebirth. The riverbanks were developed; on the right bank, the 14th-century walls were replaced by the creation of boulevards; on the left bank, an 8-kilometer panoramic tree-lined road, the Viale dei Colli, was traced, winding through the hill of San Miniato. At its peak, the piazzale was constructed as a privileged panoramic terrace overlooking the city.
