A few kilometres from the border with Switzerland lies the beautiful town of Cannobio. The ancient village of Roman origins, set between lake and mountains, has preserved its historic charm intact; a stroll through the streets of the medieval old town is a must, before stopping for an aperitif in one of the many bars along the lakeside. The Lido of Cannobio is the best known on Lake Maggiore, which in this area has received the prestigious Blue Flag award from the Foundation for Environmental Education. Another strength of this lovely beach is the wind, which makes it an ideal place for sailing sports, a true paradise for kitesurfing and windsurfing enthusiasts. Just above Cannobio, from the characteristic hamlets of Gurro and Finero, many trekking trails set off into the Cannobina Valley, the northern access point to the Val Grande National Park, the largest wilderness area in the Alps. The village can be reached via State Road 34, which runs from Gravellona Toce (VB) to the national border with nearby Switzerland, or via hydrofoil and ferry services linking the village with the other lakeside municipalities. From Cannobio it is also possible to take Provincial Road 75 of the Cannobina Valley, which leads into the valley of the same name, from which you can reach Val Vigezzo, the famous Valley of the Painters, which enchants visitors with its picturesque scenery.
