Baveno lies along the Piedmont shores of Lake Maggiore and is a municipality rich in history, traditions, and culture. The monumental complex also includes the Baptistery of Saint John, of Early Christian origin (5th century), the Romanesque bell tower, the churchyard, and the 19th-century Via Crucis. Its hamlets are enchanting and certainly deserve a stroll: Romanico, Roncaro, and Loita, set on the hillside, offer breathtaking views of the lake; Oltrefiume has a distinctive historic center rich in history; and Feriolo, an ancient fishermen’s village, with its natural gulf and long sandy public beach, is an idyllic place. Baveno is the site where pink granite is quarried; its particularly prized qualities made it, in past centuries, the material used to build major monuments in Milan, Rome, Paris, New York, Chicago, and Bangkok. Everything in Baveno points to pink granite—the stone quarried in the mountains behind it—and to the stonemason’s craft: the extraction and working of stone has profoundly shaped the area’s character and development. From street names (Via Cave, Via degli Scalpellini, Via del Granito Rosa, etc.) to civic and religious buildings, to individual monuments and artifacts, every corner bears the mark of granite, the activity, and the people connected with it. Baveno pink granite is the best known of the Lake Granites (Maggiore, Orta, and Mergozzo). To enhance its value, Baveno works in a network with the Montorfano Granite Ecomuseum, and its territory is included in the Sesia-Valgrande UNESCO Geopark.
