Thanks to their numerous appearances in film and television over the years, the most expensive neighbourhoods in America are fairly ingrained into the international cultural consciousness. From Beverly Hills to the Upper West Side and beyond, a few exclusive zip codes always stand out as the most desirable in the country – but has the media got it right? While the exact definition of ‘most expensive’ can be measured in a variety of ways, we take a look at the stunning areas where properties have sold for over $10 million in the last year.
Beverley Hills, California (90210)
America’s most famous zip code is still the priciest: 18 homes were sold for over $10 million in the past year, and its status as the place to be for Hollywood’s biggest names remains unchallenged. It also saw 80 properties sold for over $5 million in the same period, nearly twice as many as its nearest rival.
Lincoln Square, Manhattan, New York (10023)
With 17 sales over the $10 million mark last year, this exclusive neighbourhood in Manhattan’s Upper West Side shows that the east coast can certainly compete with its west coast rivals. Alongside the world famous Lincoln Center, you’ll find multiple churches, synagogues and mosques, the Museum of Biblical Art and a park dedicated to Dante Alighieri, all in this exclusive city square.
Upper East Side, Manhattan (10021)
Another NYC neighbourhood, the Upper East Side stretches from the Fifth Avenue Central Park entrance to the bank of the East River. This zip code saw 16 luxury properties sold last year, placing it a close third in the rankings, and it’s another central location in the nation’s most populated city. Three other New York zip codes made it into the top ten – 10014, 10028 and 10022 – cementing the Big Apple’s status as the American capital of high-end real estate.
Aspen, Colorado (81611)
It’s not all coastal states at the top of America’s rich list – the stunning mountains and valleys of Colorado give the Centennial State a dramatically beautiful landscape. The city of Aspen is one of its biggest draws, boasting 16 sales above $10 million last year. Excellent skiing facilities in the nearby Aspen Mountain resort and several downtown designer outlets have helped contribute to its status as one of the most expensive places to live in the country. Counting listings as well as sales, Aspen has 56 properties over the $10 million mark, more than any other neighbourhood in America.
Bel Air, Los Angeles, California (90077)
Finally, we return to California for another iconic neighbourhood. 12 properties were sold in Bel Air for over $10 million last year – one buyer was Kanye West, who moved into a new $11 million mansion in June with his girlfriend Kim Kardashian. Needless to say, if you’re hoping to make your home in this part of town, expect plenty more recognisable faces as your neighbours.
