Fish Hoek is famous for being a “dry” area – one of the conditions placed by the owner who gave the land for development was that there is no alcohol sold there. Nowadays, alcohol is available in restaurants and bars but there are no bottle stores. Fish Hoek or Vissers Baay or Visch Hoek appears on the earliest maps of the Cape.
Surrounded by rugged mountains, the village of Fish Hoek boasts a fine beach of white sand and excellent bathing conditions with colourful Victorian bathing boxes adding a festive touch. From June to October each year, whales come into Fish Hoek bay and loll around just 50 metres from the shore in preparation for giving birth and mating. Huge schools of dolphins are also sometimes seen.
The nearby nature reserves provide further opportunities for lovers of fauna and flora to enjoy the South African outdoors. The wetlands also offer fantastic opportunities for bird watching.
If you’re lucky, you could see the local fishermen ‘trekking’ for yellowtail in their traditional wooden rowing boats. For enthusiastic golfers the Clovelly Golf Course offers 18 holes on its charming, narrow course that meanders along a dune-lined valley and sea views.
