Inland, the central areas of the island reflect traditional Mallorcan country life with beautiful landscapes of the Traumuntana mountains, fields of almond and carob trees, terraces of olive trees, vines and sheep grazing along ancient stone walls. This is the heart of Mallorca where annual “fiestas” are enjoyed and actively promoted by the local town halls to maintain and encourage local village life. There are many bustling towns such as Santa Maria with attractive markets, picturesque hill villages such as Montuiri, or important wine growing towns such as Binnissalem.
In the centre of the island foreign residents tend to stay for longer periods of time or live permanently. In recent years town houses in the villages have become increasingly popular with foreign residents who want to enjoy the Mallorcan way of life. In addition, large fincas with land have become increasingly popular providing privacy and space with mountain or country views.
