Now it’s certainly not far off: last week was the official beginning of spring and we will doubtlessly feel it soon. Valentine’s Day has passed, the evenings are getting lighter, and there are new buds on the trees. Spring is traditionally the time of year for clearing out clutter and doing a deep clean of the home: so once you get on top of the house work, try these spring decorating tips to really bring the season home to roost.
Add a splash of seasonal colour
Spring is all about pastel shades and bright yellows. Give your décor a quick refresh by adding some pastel patterned throw cushions to your soft furnishings, upgrading bedroom linen, and replacing dark coloured lampshades with lighter ones. You’ll be surprised at how much of a difference some bright towels and matching scented hand soap can make in the guest bathroom, too.
Make the most of spring flowers
The best of this season’s blooms can add some lovely colour, not to mention fragrance, to any room. Pink tulips, yellow daffodils, lilac bluebells and white gerbera daisies make a beautiful bouquet. You can keep them fresher for longer by trimming the bottom of the stems diagonally every few days, and adding lemon juice to the water to kill algae and bacteria.
Add some subtle scents
If you live in the suburbs or a rural area, throwing open the windows during the day is the best way to let spring into your home, as the breeze brings the smell of freshly cut grass with it. In the city, you can recreate this invigorating outdoor smell with some new scented candles or reed diffusers. Choose light, floral scents like lemon, magnolia, or lavender.
Make the most of your mantel
Changing the mantelpiece display each season is a great way to ensure that these period features remain the focal point of any room. Simply clean and dust the shelf, then add some seasonal decorations. Spring florals are an obvious choice, but a flowering branch of cherry blossom laid across the mantelshelf can be beautiful in its simplicity. Anchor it on either side with some sky blue candles, then brighten up the fireplace itself with a large vase of bright yellow blooms.
Rearrange the furniture
Moving your favourite pieces around is a sure-fire way to breathe new life into a room. Spend a few minutes studying the layout of the room and make a plan: if you move your couch to another wall, will it give you more room for entertaining? Start the heavy lifting once you have a clear idea of how you want the room to look.
