Costa San Giorgio

Costa San Giogio

Costa San Giorgio is a hilly road in Florence, located in the Oltrarno, between Piazza Santa Felicita and via San Leonardo. The “coste” are in fact the roads in steep descent or arduous climb.

One of the most beautiful streets of the city that owes its name to the baroque church known not only as the San Giorgio on the “costa” but also as the Spirito Santo (Holy Spirit).

On top of the hill you find the Porta San Giorgio ( see image), with a enthroned Madonna surrounded by saints, the bezel, and a bas-relief of San Giorgio slaying the dragon out, an art work of Andrea da Pontedera.
