Buzzing with a unique energy, and often dubbed the ‘SoHo’ of Cape Town, Greenpoint is located to the north west of the central business district. It is happy home to an increasing number of young professionals residing in new and renovated mid-rise apartment and mixed-use developments. Greenpoint is bisected by Somerset Road/Main Road, and lined by a variety of cafes, restaurants, clubs and shops, of which more anon.
Greenpoint’s most iconic landmark is the Cape Town Stadium; this truly magnificent structure was created on Green Point Common for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, At the same time, a number of important and long lasting infrastructural developments were made, including timely upgrades to Western Boulevard and the new Granger Bay Boulevard along with a massive investment in creating an urban park around the stadium.
Greenpoint Urban Park is a multipurpose, secure green space that is free to the public and open seven days a week from 7am to 7pm. It is also a learning zone, housing a garden which is separated into ‘People and Plants’, ‘Wetlands’ and ‘Discovering Biodiversity’.Adjacent to the Cape Town Stadium it has stunning views of both the stadium and Signal Hill.
Separating the City Centre from Sea Point, Signal Hill offers magnificent views from its summit and is a super sundowner spot. Listen out for the noon gun, fired from its lower slopes daily, Monday to Saturday, in days of old a warning to the burghers to check their watches!
