Introduction to Caine Road

Caine Road, named after the founder of the Hong Kong police force and Hong Kong’s first magistrate, William Caine is a main arterial thoroughfare of the Western Mid-Levels area of Hong Kong. Located halfway between SOHO and Robinson Road, Caine Road, in fact, causes a pause within Hong Kong’s landmark Central Mid-Levels Escalator system, which provides easy reach to this lively street and beyond.

A mixed-use street, Caine Road is home to many upscale residential apartment complexes in addition to chic restaurants, cafes, gourmet stores, schools, religious and historic sites. A museum dedicated to Dr Sun Yat-Sen, the ‘Father of Modern China’ occupies the magnificent Kom Tong Hall on Castle Road located close by while the interesting but quirky Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences is housed in a magnificent Edwardian edifice on Caine Lane.

As a ‘where to live option’ Caine Road ticks a lot of boxes for it features a bouquet full of conveniences. In terms of location, it is perfectly positioned, accessible via 20-minute ride from Central up and down the escalator apart from various public bus and mini bus services.

Its proximity to the many, busy dining and entertainment options of SOHO and Wyndham street, bestow on it a certain hipness quotient, though its location a few yards away from the heart of Soho shields it from sounds of the high-spirited nightly revelry of the district.

That is not to say that Caine Road is devoid of any entertainment, for the street hosts several eateries such as the expansive IPC food Labs and the upscale Japanese fine-dining restaurant Thirty-Eight (both located at the uberluxe Gramercy). Also on site are several charming cafes like Filters Lane, Rosie Jean’s Café, Freshness Coffee, Maison Eric Kayser Artisan Boulanger Café in addition to an outlet of ubiquitous Starbucks chain.

Asian food aficionados are not neglected either for restaurants like 1941 Vietnam, Blue Pool Restaurant and Bakery, Kawada Japanese and Dommon Sapporo Ramen also dot the street. Added to this mix are gourmet purveyors like Pacific Gourmet and specialty food stores like Il BelPaese, Nature’s Blessing and 759 along with an outpost of Wellcome.  Other businesses on the street include several dry cleaners, beauty salons, pet stores, clothing and lifestyle product stores.

The street is zoned for the Kennedy School (Primary) and Island School (Secondary) of the ESF network and it also hosts excellent schools and colleges like the Woodlands Montessori Academy, the Sacred Heart Canossian School (and college of commerce) and St Margaret’s college. Further, the Canossa Hospital on Old Peak Road is also within easy reach.
