SAILING: The Java crew, led by skipper Mick Coleman, took the top spot at the Multihull Solutions Regatta last weekend in Chalong Bay.

Finishing four times in first place and two times in second place, Java accumulated an outstanding six points over the weekend which was good enough for 1st overall in the Racing Multihull category and the Overall Perpetual Trophy.

Right behind them were Asia Catamarans Hurricane, skippered by Alan Carwardine, with just eight points over the weekend. A DNF (did not finish) in race two put the crew behind early in the competition despite a solid showing in the rest of the races, which took place in the bar in front of the Ao Chalong Yacht Club.

The Bob Mott-led Nina crew came in 3rd place with 14 points in the Racing Multihull category after a series several second and third place finishes in five races.

Meanwhile, the Firefly 850 Sport class saw the Advanced Racing Team take the number one spot on the Mamba boat. Neil Ayre’s crew racked up a score of nine points despite a DNF in the first race.

In 2nd place was John Newnham’s Twin Sharks crew that accumulated 11 points over the weekend. The crew finished second in three races and first in once, but a fifth and fourth place finish in two races sunk the team’s chances at the top spot.

Despite a strong performance in which they finished three races in first place and a fourth race in third place, two straight DNF’s forced Hans Rahmann’s Voodoo crew down to 3rd overall in the Firefly 850 Sport category.

In the Open Multihull class, Roman Shirokov led his crew on the Star Fruit to the top spot after claiming three races in first place.

The regatta was Asia’s biggest gathering of multihull sailing boats (catamarans and trimanaras) and the was the first under the Multihull Solutions banner.
