About 1000 luxury yachts, starting at 78 feet (24 meters) length, chose the island as their home port
As soon as one of the huge luxury yachts anchors at the marina of Palma, plenty of boat enthusiasts are allured to the pier, gazing at the swimming artwork. A special eye candy could be enjoyed when “Venus” with its 255 feet (78 meters) length buckled on in July, which used to be the renowned motor yacht of the deceased apple founder Steve Jobs.
Even it is not an everyday routine that super yachts of international VIP’s heading for the marina of Palma, the island doesn’t have to hide from the Côte d’Azur, the Caribbean or the Gulf region. The marina of Palma, as well as the noble marinas Puerto Portals and Port Adriano, enjoys an increasing popularity by the big motor yachts. !Big! is a very relative term in this context. Yachts up to 97.5 feet (30 meters) are commonly called “normal” in the yachting-world. Yachts with a length of 97.5 up to 195 feet (30 up to 60 meters) are called “super yachts” and every keel with a length with more than 195 feet (60 meters) is considered as a “mega yacht”.
Currently “Azzam” is the biggest mega yacht and beats the magical 195 feet (60 meters) by tripling this length. A Saudi-Arabian Prince owns the “Azzam” with its incredible 585 feet (180 meters) which was build in 2013. So far the “Azzam” was not yet seen in the waters of Palma de Mallorca.
In contrast, another mega yacht called “A“, which is owned by the Russian tycoon-couple Andrey and Aleksandra Melnichenko, anchored twice for flying visits in Mallorca. This 300-million-dollar-yacht measures astonishing 386.75 feet (119 meters) and was built in 2008 at the German shipyard Howaldtswerke after the layout of Star Designer Philippe Starck. “A” owns an exclusive 747.5 square feet (230 square meters) loft.
Another celebrity made by a German shipyard (Blohm + Voss) is the Lady Moura, which has a permanent mooring for more than 10 years in Palma. The 340.75 feet (104,85 meters) long yacht which is owned by the Arabian business man Nasser ar-Raschid, was build in 1990 and was classified as the longest yacht for many years. Today “Lady Moura” fills the 24th place in the long list of mega and super yachts. About 1000 of these super yachts chose the marina of Palma de Mallorca as their home port with permanent moorings. For Palmas shipyard industry this branch of industry is very important and its maintenance works and offered services clearly increased during the last 10 years. Just in Palma are about 350 companies specialized on all kinds of requirements of the yacht branch and provide approximately 2,000 to 3,000 jobs.
By expanding the marina capacities of Palma and for example Port Adriano, the number of moorings and installing for big yachts were highly extended and all infrastructures of the shipyards improved over the last 15 years. Overall the number of yachts increased to the triple or even the quadruple number during the last few years with a further increasing tendency.
