Anybody who lives in northern Europe and enjoys outdoor pursuits knows full well that the weather is often against them; in summer the weather can be too hot to work out inside a gym and in winter practicing sports outside means facing the cold and wet when the temptation is to curl up on the sofa with a warm blanket and read a good book! Especially over the festive season, when your motivation to exercise is sometimes lost in all the Christmas feasting right up until New Year when new resolutions are made to start exercising once more.
Only two hours flying time away, Mallorca offers a real paradise for all outdoor enthusiasts to practice sports and enjoy its wonderful landscapes all year round. The island has the ideal landscape and conditions for hiking, which is particularly popular with friends and family, running, cycling, sailing and golf. Get inspired now and watch this Video.
Apart from sports, there are plenty of outdoor pursuits for all ages and one suggestion, which is off the beaten track, is the “Reserva Puig de Galatzó” nature reserve in south west Mallorca. Located close to the traditional Mallorca village of Puigpunyent, this very special place covers approximately 250 hectares alongside the “Puig de Galatzó” mountain which is one of the tallest on Mallorca at 1.028 metres. The nature reserve features a walking trail of approximately 3.5 kilometres running between the mountains and the valley with idyllic countryside to enjoy en route stopping at natural points of interest including grottos, caves and waterfalls.
The Reserva is well known for its wildlife; birds of prey, colourful peacocks and a variety of animals, including many indigenous species to the Balearics. It’s a great place for hiking, climbing, mountain biking or running.
It also offers exciting additional activities such as “flying” over the treetops on a zip line, mountain climbing, crossing canyons on rope bridges and archery. The Reserva is well organised with an excellent picnic spot for visitors, where there is a bar serving snacks and drinks. In this area large grills are provided for barbecuing in the fresh air for those visitors who want to bring their own food and cook outside. At lunchtimes there is a popular demonstration with birds of prey by the park keepers and children love the small zoo nearby where they can also get up close and handle some of the animals.
In summer, visitors can jump into one of several natural waterfalls near the picnic area for a refreshing plunge. In autumn and winter this nature reserve is one of the island’s natural highlights and if it snows, it’s even more beautiful offering spectacular views over the snow covered countryside.
The spectacular countryside of La Reserva continues across the Sierra Traumuntana Mountains to areas such as Calvia or Capdella where you can experience the authentic side of Mallorca and enjoy a relaxed and peaceful rhythm of life.
