Until recently, finding authentic pizza in Hong Kong was quite a herculean task. Sure, chain restaurants like Pizza Express and Pizza Hut have been around for ages in the city, but if you wanted to get something akin to a New York slice or a Napolitano pie, there was not much of a choice. All that was on offer were half-baked, soggy, greasy and doughy pies at some restaurants masquerading as Italian trattorias.
However, pizza offerings in the city have undergone a seismic change, and they have dramatically improved in the last couple of years, thanks to the arrival of innovative restaurateurs on Hong Kong’s pizza scene. Most of these new pizza-serving restaurants have debuted in the most international of all of Hong Kong’s districts, the hub of the city’s business, finance and commerce, the Central district.
Though with Hong Kongers developing a taste for a slice for authentic pizza, some of these restaurants have even begun to spread the goodness afar by way of setting up shop in other parts of the city.
