Sa Dragonera – Mallorca’s Dragon Island close to Sant Elm

Sa Dragonera MallorcaSa Dragonera, the idyllic dragon island is located about 800 meters off the southwest tip of Mallorca. The name of the well 420-acre island is is explained by their odd shape, when viewed from the side, resembles a sleeping dragon. Opposite of the island is the small village of Sant Elm, from where excursion boats bring small groups of visitors to the Dragon Island daily during the summer months.

The rocky surface of the island is covered with bushy vegetation, trees do not exist. This area is a paradise for rare birds (eg Audouins, Eleonora’s falcon and Sardinian Warbler) and for example lizards. With a length of 4.2 km and a maximum width of 900 meters, this can easily be explored on foot and at the highest point is the lighthouse Far Vell.

Fortunately, the Dragon Island has never been settled, passionate conservationists were always able to bring all development plans successfully to the case since 1995 and now the island is a nature reserve and is a symbol for conservation of Mallorcan nature.

An important advice: Sa Dragonera provides no catering. So it’s important to take drinks and food as well as suntan and a hat.

The village of Sant Elm with the offshore island of Sa Dragonera used to be the favorite place of pirates and was considered as a popular and safe shelter. Today Sant Elm with its small sandy beach, numerous shops and good restaurants is frequently visited by tourists who are looking for a quiet place in an idyllic setting with fantastic views
