Time-Out-Mercado-da-Ribeira-20-610x406Travelogues and journals often describe the many delights of Asian street food markets, but, in fact, animated markets exist in most cities around the globe. Mercado da Ribeira, (or  Mercado 24 de Julho) is the main market in Portugal’s lively capital Lisbon. Located within the city-center, riverside, Cais do Sodre neighborhood, the market, which is topped with a grand Moorish-style dome and has a cavernous interior, dates back to 1892. The market for years has been the biggest and cheapest food market in Lisbon that has supplied the freshest produce, meat and seafood to residents of the city.

Since May 2014, Mercado da Ribeira has transformed into the ‘leading gastronomic destination’ in Lisbon for its management has passed on to Time Out Lisboa magazine. The magazine has gone on to establish an expansive food court within the market featuring fine restaurants headed by renowned Portuguese culinary talents like Chefs Alexandre Silva, Miguel Castro Silva, Henrique Sá Pessoa and Vítor Claro. Alongside these eateries are 35 chic black and white kiosks including outposts of famous Portuguese food stores like Conserveira Nacional, Garraferia Nacional, Arcádia (the best chocolatier in the country) Santini (delicious ice-creams)and others offering the best in Portuguese fare. A meander through the kiosks offers visitors a chance to sample numerous Portuguese delights like Prego (much-loved garlic steak sandwiches served with mustard piripiri), seasoned and fried pork loins (Bifana), Azeitão  cheese (made with sheep’s milk), custard tarts, luscious Portuguese wines and much more.

The food court offers a seating capacity for five hundred people inside, and the market’s outdoor terrace spaces can accommodate an additional 250 people. Opening hours are from 10 am until midnight from Sunday to Wednesday and from 10 am until 2 am from Thursday to Sunday. The original fruit, meat and vegetable vendors still occupy a section of the huge market but are not present on Sundays. Have you been deliberating a real estate investment in Europe? Would having such a delightful market close by fill you with absolute delight? Then why not consider Portugal and its vivacious capital Lisbon?
