Tai Tam – Enjoy nature in all its glory

Hong Kong Island boasts of some truly picturesque areas; one such lush, enclave is Tai Tam located near Stanley on the southeast corner of the Island. Tai Tam, which overlooks stunning Tai Tam Bay, is home to one of Hong Kong’s largest country parks.

An expansive verdant area, which also hosts within its boundaries four reservoirs namely Tai Tam Upper Reservoir, Tai Tam Byewash Reservoir, Tai Tam Intermediate Reservoir and Tai Tam Tuk Reservoir. Tai Tam has thus been fittingly named, for its Chinese name translates in English as ‘big pools’ a direct reference to the four water bodies the area encompasses. The Tai Tam reservoirs were built between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th Century. These reservoirs continue to serve as the most major water storage facilities on Hong Kong Island.

The Tai Tam country park is Hong Kong Island’s prominent green lung located within proximity of the bustling city. The park abounds with much flora and fauna and varied, WW2 memorabilia-littered hiking trails, all of which offer residents a chance to get up close and personal with nature. A real godsend considering the park is located not far from the fast-paced environment of a pulsating city.  Aside from being a favored recreational destination of locals and expats alike, the lush green neighborhood of Tai Tam is also a settled community offering diverse residential accommodations.

Tai Tam offers a varied mix of dwellings in the form of townhouses(some outfitted with pools and large gardens), facility-filled lofty condominium towers and low-rise apartment blocks. Popular developments in Tai Tam include complexes like Hong Kong Parkview, the Manhattan, Pacific View, Bluewater and Belgravia Heights. These developments offer comprehensive recreational facilities including regular shuttle bus services to areas like Stanley, Central and even MTR stations at Chai Wan and Shau Kei Wan.

Most abodes situated within the neighborhood of Tai Tam afford water or green views and are spacious enough to accommodate families. In fact, most of Tai Tam’s developments are set up like self-contained residential communities with amenities like onsite supermarkets, restaurants and the like. The stretch of Tai Tam road hosts several luxurious stand-alone houses and villas, most of which offer uninterrupted stunning ocean views. The boundaries of the Tai Tam extend towards Stanley and also include the neighboring area of the Red hill Peninsula. This locality is home to luxe low-rise developments offering apartments, villas and townhouses such as the Redhill Peninsula, Le Palais and Red Hill Park.

Transport Links

Like much of the Southern side of Hong Kong Island, Tai Tam does not have any MTR connections. However, the area is well served by various public bus and mini-bus routes. Most residential developments located within the Tai Tam area also offer regular shuttle bus services to areas like Central and Stanley for their occupants. Car-ownership levels in the neighborhood are also quite high as many Tai Tam abodes are equipped with car parking facilities. The commute to Central from Tai Tam extends over 45 minutes to an hour depending on the prevailing traffic conditions.

Schools

Tai Tam offers some excellent schooling options. Located within this scenic neighborhood are the middle and senior sections of the prestigious Hong Kong International School, which offers an American-style education right here in Hong Kong.  In fact, the junior section of the school is located within easy reach at Repulse Bay.

Other schooling options in Tai Tam include satellite schools belonging to the Woodland’s Pre-school, the Eton House International Pre-School, the Sunshine International Pre-school and Tutor Time networks.

As for schools belonging to the ESF network the Bradbury, Quarry Bay and South Island School are meant to accommodate the student population residing in the district of Tai Tam.

Facilities

The Hong Kong Parkview development has an onsite supermarket in the form of a Fusion outlet.  Additional supermarket shopping options are available close by at Redhill Plaza (Wellcome), Stanley Plaza (Taste), the Repulse Bay Arcade (Jason’s Market Place) and at Jardine’s Lookout (International and Jason’s Market Place). 

In fact, the shopping plazas at Redhill, Stanley and Repulse Bay host myriad stores, restaurants and cafes,which offer various conveniences for the residents of Tai Tam. Tai Tam also has its own small beachfront, in the form of Turtle Cove situated at the bottom of a long flight of stairs on Red hill Peninsula. This sandy ocean area is not as big as the beaches on Stanley but is undoubtedly scenic and charming.  Also located within Tai Tam is the country club outpost of the American Club in Hong Kong, an exclusive membership club popular with both expatriates and locals.

Attractions

Tai Tam Country Park offers several hiking trails, which differ according to routes they traverse and the degree of difficulty they offer. Two of the most popular trails are the Tai Tam Waterworks Heritage Trail and the Dragon’s Back Hiking Trail. 

The Tai Tam Waterworks Heritage Trail leads hikers past twenty-one old world water work structures like dams, aqueducts and valve houses which are now classified as heritage structures. The trail starts off at Hong Kong Parkview and meanders downhill through the Tai Tam Country Park for five km before terminating at Tai Tam Bay. BBQ pits and restrooms are available along the trail, which is suitable for hikers of all levels.

The Dragon’s Back Hiking Trail once described, as the “best urban hike in Asia” by Time Magazine is a far tougher proposition. This hike sets off at Tai Tam Gap and traverses eleven km of cliffs and hillocks before ending at then Tai Tam Scout Center at Tai Tam Reservoir. The trail offers stunning views along its route and is a favorite with experienced hiking enthusiasts.
