Celebrating 30 Years of The Anchorage Club. This development was one of the first on the island that combined French architecture with Spanish flair located in a unique coastal position in the coastal resort of Illetes only 12 minutes drive from Palma’s city centre and 15 minutes drive to Palma International Airport.
The architect selected for the task back in 1982 was Francois Spoerry who had previously created Port Grimaud in the 1960’s based on a concept of Venetian style canals with colourful fisherman’s style houses.
Record Breaking Prices and Sale. The Anchorage development extended over an area of 300 hectares along the coast and 200 hectares behind in the second line and would, in essence create a “private village” comprising of 230 apartments from 1 – 4 bedrooms. The development offered 24 hour gated security and community services including a restaurant, spa/gym area and swimming pools. The Anchorage was the first development of its kind to feature colourful facades and different coloured shutters, a look which has been subsequently widely copied. At the time it was launched at prices which were almost double anything else on the market at the time with an entry price of approximately 15M pesetas (approximately 100,000 Euros). Building of the first phase started in 1983 and by the time it was launched onto the market in 1984 the majority of the apartments sold out off plan within 60 days and the main buyers were British, German and Swiss.
The “Other Mallorca”. The development was promoted on the theme of the “other Mallorca” presenting a very private and peaceful haven ideal for the second home holiday home for the well-heeled and famous including Princess Margaret who holidayed there and the London based interior designer and socialite, Lady Weinberg (Anouska Hempel Design).
Premium Investment. Approximately 10% of the apartments are still owned by the original owners and often apartments change hands via word of mouth. The reputation and cache of The Anchorage has held fast and it remains a premium quality development in a unique location of beauty and tranquillity. Today, apartments will come onto the market at a starting price of 500,000 Euros for a two bedroom apartment without sea views to approaching 2M Euros for a seafront duplex with garden in front of the sea and direct sea access.
