Film Set Mallorca – Hollywood Icons of the 30s

Ca Na Tacha Cala FornellsBy thinking of Hollywood celebrities visiting the beautiful island of Mallorca everyone immediately connects it with the recent press-pictures of the stars enjoying the endless leisure facilities of the island. There are only very little hints and indications that already in the 30′s Hollywood stars have discovered the island as an exclusive destination.

Natacha RambovaNatacha Rambova, Hollywood’s icon from that era was one of the first connoisseurs of Mallorca and she easily fell under the spell of the beautiful island. Natacha lived a glamorous & exiting life as an actress, dancer, designer and producer. Today this American lady, with civil name Winifred O’Shaunessy and later on adopted by Winifred Hudnut, is famous for her marriage in 1923 with the silent movie star Rudolph Valentino.

Her name is still connected with her ex-husband name although the marriage only lasted three short years and even though the career of her own is impressive. Natacha discovered the passion for the island with her second husband Alvaro Urzaiz y Silva, a Spanish aristocrat which she married in the cathedral of Palma in 1934. During the following years they dedicated their life to refurbish properties for the high society. During the turmoils of the Spanish civil war, Natasha decided to move to France where the marriage ultimately failed and was dissolved in 1939, childless. Natacha Rambova died with 69 years in Pasadena USA after living several years in Egypt and France.

One of the emblematic properties, that was built under Natacha’s guidance is located in Cala Fornells and was built by Alvaro, after the divorce and is called Villa S´Estaca. This property, which is enthroned on a rock, was scene of numerous films for example Agatha Christie’s “Evil under the sun” with Sir Peter Ustinov in 1982.

Numerous aristocrats and celebrities spent their holidays at the property and celebrated their glamorous parties. One of the high society members – Don Juan de Borbón, grandfather of the Spanish Rey Felipe, anchored regularly with his boat at the property. The second property represents an even closer connection to Natacha and in relation to her first name it was fondly named “Ca Na Tacha“. This historic gem of the golden Hollywood era is privately owned and is currently not for sale.
