North West Province
North West Province is the 6th largest province in South Africa with an area of 104,882 km². Its motto being Kagiso le Tswelelopele, meaning Peace and Prosperity.
Mahikeng – formerly, and still commonly, known as Mafikeng is the capital city of the North-West Province, with Rustenburg being the largest City. The population census in 2011 showed a total of 3,509,953 inhabitants, and an estimate taken in 2014 showed that it has grown to 3,676,300, ranking it 7th by population in the country. Towns in this province with a population of 100 000+ are Klerksdorp, Potchefstroom and Rustenburg.
The mainstay of the economy of North West Province is mining, which generates more than half of the province’s gross domestic product and provides jobs for a quarter of its workforce. The chief minerals being mined are gold, mined at Orkney and Klerksdorp; uranium, mined at Klerksdorp; platinum, mined at Rustenburg and Brits; and diamonds, mined at Lichtenburg, Christiana, and Bloemhof. The northern and western parts of the province have many sheep farms and cattle and game farms. The eastern and southern parts are crop-growing regions that produce maize, sunflowers, tobacco, cotton, and citrus fruits. It is known as the “Platinum Province”, owing the name to its wealth of this precious metal.
The province has two university campusses: the University of North West campus in Mmabatho and the University of North West Potchefstroom campus. These two universities have now merged and the new institution is called the North-West University.

Potchefstroom is situated in the Tlokwe Local Municipality – the seat of the local municipality is also in Potchefstroom. According to Craig Hutchinson, CEO of Engel & Völkers Southern Africa, “Two of our top performing shops in South Africa are located in the North West Province, namely E&V Potchefstroom and E&V Hartbeespoortdam. At our recent annual Rewards & Recognition gala affair in Cape Town, both these shops were nominated for various awards, which is a testimony to their footprint in this province. The Potchefstroom licence partner, Carl Venter and his team won most of these national awards due to their professional service, local knowledge and team work.
Craig explains that the success of the Potchefstroom shop is due to a number of economic factors which generate a steady flow of prospective home buyers. Potchefstroom is an important industrial, service and agricultural growth point. Industries operating from Potchefstroom include steel, food, and chemical processing industries. The chicken meat industry is of key importance to the area, with a number of major players situated around Potchefstroom. The North West University also creates a continuous demand for student and staff accommodation. Carl and his team managed to exploit this demand for housing by understanding the needs of both buyers and sellers, and developed a marketing strategy to assist all their property needs. They specialise in residential accommodation, student accommodation (including student apartments and student flats), commercial property (office and retail space), farms and lodges as well as a rental division for residential and student accommodation. Their Projects division manages all new developments and projects.
The Hartbeespoort dam, with its spectacular scenery, unique villages and estates surrounding it, enjoys peaceful tranquillity and a picturesque countryside setting. It is conveniently located within close proximity to many amenities and facilities, which is why “Harties” is widely referred to as “Close to the city, out of this world!” Both the cities of Johannesburg and Pretoria are within one hour’s drive.
Hartbeespoort features some of the most sought-after residential and investment properties, catering for permanent residency as well as being a popular leisure destination. Due to the warm climate and an abundance of tourism activities in the area, Hartbeespoort is perfect for weekend getaways from the cities nearby and also for international visitors. The Pilansberg Game Reserve which offers ‘The Big 5′, as well as the Sun City Casino, Golf and Pleasure Resort, are all easily accessible within 1 hours’ drive from Harties.
The Local Municipality of Madibeng is a local municipality in the Bojanala Platinum District Municipality. The seat of the local municipality is Brits. The popular tourist area of Hartbeespoort is also located in the municipality.
The Engel & Völkers brand has made its mark in this area due to the management and team offering unsurpassed service and local knowledge of the area.
The Engel & Völkers Hartbeespoortdam shop is managed by the two licence partners, Antoinette Swanepoel and Cherry Grobler. They are also involved in the day-to-day management and selling activities, which is why the shop is so successful in the residential sales happening in the area right around the dam.
