Travel Tuesday: Florida

In the Sunshine State in the southern USA, the sun reportedly shines on around 300 days of the year. Long sandy beaches, breath-taking sunsets, and national parks also attract visitors. Are you planning a trip to Florida and still looking for a few travel tips?

Travel Tuesday: FloridaFlorida Keys

A string of around 200 islands extends off the southern tip of the state, along a stretch of some 200 kilometres. They are connected with bridges and practically invite you to explore them on a multi-day tour. The Seven Miles Bridge is particularly remarkable with its 11 kilometres in length. The US Highway 1 goes all the way to the southern tip of the Florida keys. Key West is best explored on foot or by bicycle – there you can visit Hemingway House, in which the artist wrote most of his works.

Anyone who wants to explore nature should not miss out on the Everglades. The Everglades National Park, which occupies approximately 20% of the whole area, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Contrary to popular belief, the Everglades is not a swamp, but rather a flooded prairie. Lush and diverse plants, mangrove forests, and numerous alligators can all be observed from up close there. A tour on an airboat through the knee-deep water is recommended – get face to face with an alligator!

Welcome to Miami! The vibrant metropolis with fascinating architecture in the art deco style attracts visitors with many glitzy bars and trendy restaurants. In the South Beach District with the famous Ocean Drive, it’s easy to dance until dawn. Of course, shopping in Miami should not be missed: Visit the Sawgrass Mills, one of the largest outlet malls in Florida or shop in style at the luxurious Aventura Mall, which offers over 300 designer shops for a long stroll. Warning! Chance of celebrity sightings: in the third largest shopping mall in the United States, it is not uncommon to encounter celebrities and stars.

A trip to the famous Disneyworld is essential, especially for families. Countless attractions await both little and grown-up visitors there. The highlight is, of course, the legendary Magic Kingdom with its live shows. Orlando has even more attractions yet to offer: a visit to Sea World makes close-up encounters with marine life possible and spectacular live shows await visitors to the park. Spaceship fans shouldn’t miss a trip to the Kennedy Space Centre at Cape Canaveral.

Anyone who travels to Florida will admire the countless beaches stretching along the coast there. Highly recommended is the stunningly beautiful Clearwater Beach or Anna Maria Island, which boasts unspoilt nature and tranquillity.
