Travel Tuesday: Insider tips for the Côte d’Azur

The beautiful location of the French luxury city of Cannes on the Côte d’Azur will make the heart of every lover of Mediterranean climate and culture beat faster. The azure Mediterranean coast is the epitome of diversity: overall, it is characterised by magnificent promenades lined with palm trees, luxury properties, yachts, casinos and picturesque villages. Here is what you can expect to find in the popular city of Cannes and along the Côte d’Azur.

The real estate market for the Côte d’Azur region between Cap Ferrat, Cap d’Antibes and Cannes is regarded as one of the most attractive property markets in the Mediterranean region, both for primary and secondary residences. This is not surprising, since Cannes and its immediate surroundings offer many attractions, a Mediterranean climate, unique nature and an abundance of historical monuments and architectural masterpieces. Cannes and the surrounding region also has much to offer for sports enthusiasts, e.g. golfing, surfing and skiing. The absolute highlight of the many cultural events and happenings in Cannes is, of course, the annual film festival with the Golden Palm Awards.

Exclusive living in Cannes

The transformation of the former fishing village of Cannes into a fashionable seaside resort and tourist destination began in 1834 with the visit of the English politician Lord Brougham. Nowadays, however, Cannes attracts more than just tourists and lovers of Mediterranean climate.

Apart from the many tourism offers, the port city has developed a compelling momentum of its own. The charming old port is a great starting point for exploring both the city centre and the various attractions along the Allées de la Liberté. Moreover, the probably most exclusive sandy beach in the south of France – the “Plage de la Croisette” – is only a few steps away. From here one can easily access the “Boulevard de la Croisette”, the city’s scenic waterfront promenade, which stretches along the coast for over two kilometres and links the beach and the city. It is lined with exclusive international designer boutiques, renowned restaurants and prestigious hotels. “Le Suquet”, the picturesque old town of Cannes, is somewhat less glamorous, but also more authentic. Small alleyways lined with charming restaurants lead uphill to the “Eglise Notre Dame de L’Esperance”, from where one can enjoy fantastic views of Cannes and the harbour.

Discover La Californie lifestyle

La Californie – one of the most exclusive residential areas in Cannes – is located near the harbour, only about three kilometres from the city centre. This part of Cannes, which is situated on a green hill, was given its name due to the lush Mediterranean vegetation which grows here all year round. This popular, yet quiet district is characterised by magnificent Belle Epoque-style villas, lovely chateaus, modern freehold apartments and beautiful parks. From up here one can enjoy fantastic views of Antibes all the way to the Esterel mountains, as well as sea views.

In the episode on the Côte d’Azur of our TV show “The Fascination of Living – Engel & Völkers exclusive” we present the Belle Epoque-style villa of the late Estee Lauder, founder of the international “Estée Lauder Cosmetics Company”. This property, with its ultramodern interior and breathtaking panoramic sea views, has a spacious living and outdoor area.

The city of Saint Jean Cap Ferrat is situated on a peninsula to the west of the bay of Villefranche-sur-Mer. In 1905, the banker’s daughter and millionairess Béatrice Ephrussi de Rothschild had a magnificent Tuscan-style palazzo with beautiful gardens built here. Since then, the former fishing village has become a popular seaside and holiday resort with a well frequented yacht harbour. Living on the natural slopes of Saint Jean Cap Ferrat enjoys great popularity – it has become one of the most expensive places in the world to live.

Residential areas along the southern coastline of France in the region between Saint Jean Cap Ferrat, Cap d’Antibes and Cannes are among the most popular in the world.
