Experience the Outdoor Lifestyle at the Lekwena Fun Run

The outdoor lifestyle appeals to more and more people – especially the fun outdoor activities and the security that comes with it.

On the morning of 5 March 2016 eager runners and walkers lined up at the start of the first Lekwena Wildlife Estate Fun Run. The crowds showing up confirmed that there is a definite demand for events in a safe, outdoor environment. The start and finish were at the newly built Lekwena Horse Stables that are easily reached by paved road from the main Lekwena Gate.

A beautiful deep orange sunrise, a good dose of fresh morning air and an active start to the day were just some of the highlights of the event.

The routes

The categories on offer were a 5 km and a 15 km trail fun run. The routes showcased the magnificence of the estate, the scenery, the outdoor lifestyle and the encounters with wildlife that Lekwena offers. Many a runner told stories at the finish about the wildlife species they spotted on the route. The 5 km run had a turning point where mothers and fathers with small children or prams could turn around to complete their (roughly) 5 km event safely.

The 15 km route took runners through one of the villages on the estate – Kiepersol Village. Runners entered from the security boom gate at Kiepersol’s entrance and passed a few of the homes in the village – getting a glimpse of the lifestyle that Lekwena residents get to experience every day. The 15 km route included a 4X4 track (that was quite challenging, but the reward was a breathtaking view from the top), some jeep track and both routes was a mixture of gravel routes and paved routes.

An Outdoor Lifestyle

With the focus on the enjoyment of the atmosphere and outdoor lifestyle that Lekwena offers  – the race was not a timed event. All runners were rewarded with a (rather larger than usual) edible ‘medal’: a complimentary boerewors roll. The smell of a braai at the finish line notably spurred on the runners and walkers over the last few meters.

The event was hosted by Engel & Völkers Potchefstroom, the exclusive marketer of Lekwena Wildlife Estate, in conjunction with Lekwena Wildlife Estate and the ALS Group, the developer of the estate.

Lekwena Wildlife Estate is situated 11km from Potchefstroom on the N12 in the direction of Johannesburg, but the event did not only draw Potchefstromers. Runners from Krugersdorp, Westonaria and Johannesburg traveled to Potchefstroom for the chance to run (or walk) in nature.
