This weekend marks the start of the colourful annual carnival season in various cities across Europe. With Venice, the European carnival capital, leading the way. Between 30 January and 9 February, the lagoon city transforms into a lavish masked ball that is unrivalled in splendour. The labyrinthine city on the Canal Grande will once again be spellbound by fairytale costumes and mysterious masks.
Each year, the “Carnevale Venezia” begins with the famous “Flight of the Angel”, during which a prominent public figure floats down from the Campanile to the Piazza San Marco. In the evenings, many entertaining events take place on San Marco Square.
Of course, Venice is always worth a visit, not only during carnival season. For many decades, the city served as a source of inspiration for various artists. Painters such as Titian or Tintoretto, the seafarer and explorer Marco Polo as well as the art collector Peggy Guggenheim have all left their distinct mark on the city. Anyone lucky enough to have a primary or secondary residence in this City of 100 Islands can benefit daily from this magnificent city, which has, in the meantime, also become a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
