Although the festive season is celebrated differently in almost every country, and each has its own traditions, the Christian festival has a marked influence that extends beyond national borders, cultures and languages.
To tune you in to the spirit of Christmas, we will show you how Christmas is celebrated in the Southern European countries. We will also reveal how to get into a festive mood anywhere in the world.
Christmas traditions around the world
Traditionally in Spain, the entire family gathers together on Christmas Eve for a sumptuous dinner. After the festive dinner, everyone draws something from the “urn of destiny”, which contains both small presents and blanks. The best thing about this custom: no-one goes home empty-handed, everyone gets something in the end.
In Italy, too, Christmas Eve starts with a festive dinner and Midnight Mass. On December 25th, this is followed by a traditional Christmas meal and the handing out of small presents, especially to the children.
In France, the families get together on Christmas Eve at the Midnight Mass. This is followed by a traditional Christmas dinner at home with the family. Presents are exchanged on the next day.
How Christmas connects
Christmas is a celebration of internationality and diversity, and draws on many different customs and traditions. At the same time, Christmas connects people from various countries and cultures who all share the same values. Apart from the Christian tradition, Christmas is, above all, a time at home with family and friends.
As an international company, Engel & Völkers is represented in 32 countries on four continents, and we are well aware of the many different traditions and cultures in the various countries.
