WTA Mallorca Open: New international tennis tournament on the Balearic Island

Bild PM WTA Mallorca OpenHamburg/ Mallorca, 14 March 2016. The inaugural WTA Mallorca Open will take place from 13-19 June 2016 at the new Santa Ponsa Tennis Club. Engel & Völkers Mallorca Southwest is official sponsor of this year’s women’s tennis tournament. “Never before has an event on this scale been held on Mallorca. The tourists and second home owners who flock here can now enjoy yet another sporting attraction,” said Hans Lenz, Managing Partner of Engel & Völkers Mallorca Southwest. The ambassador of the WTA Mallorca Open is Toni Nadal, uncle and trainer of Rafael Nadal.

First WTA grass court tournament on Mallorca
The WTA Mallorca Open sees the addition of a key grass court tournament to the international tennis calendar. From this year onwards, three rather than two grass court tournaments will be held between the Grand Slam tournaments the French Open and Wimbledon. Moreover, the WTA Mallorca Open will be the world’s first grass tournament to feature floodlit evening matches. Players already confirmed for the WTA Mallorca Open include Garbiñe Muguruza, currently No. 4 in the WTA World Ranking. She played against Serena Williams in the 2015 Wimbledon Final.

Excellent quality of courts based on Wimbledon model
The tournament venue will be the newly opened Santa Ponsa Tennis Club, with a Centre Court that seats 3,500 spectators. The club will also feature five additional grass courts, seven clay courts and three hardcourts. In addition to an exclusive pool area, the clubhouse offers a roof terrace with spectacular a view of Centre Court. The grounds and the quality of the grass court will be prepared and maintained by the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, Wimbledon.
