Location: Valldemossa, Balearic Islands
Valldemossa is a beautiful village in the western part of Mallorca, 30 minutes by car from Palma. Known for its textiles, lace, and sophisticated crafts, its lively center features a variety of shops, restaurants, and typical pastry shops. The select properties found here are unique for their authenticity and the quality of life offered. The main attraction of the village is the Royal Charterhouse, the palace built by King Jaume II for his son Sancho I, king of Mallorca, seeking a healthy climate for his asthma. Today, the Charterhouse houses parts of the original palace, an incredibly beautiful garden, a monastery, and a traditional pharmacy. In its church, frescoes by Bayeu can be admired. The Charterhouse has a 16th-century printing press, archives of Archduke Luis Salvador, and a contemporary art gallery. An additional attraction is the Frédéric Chopin and George Sand Museum, a testament to their stay in the monastery between 1838 and 1839, where Chopin composed his famous preludes and Sand wrote her autobiographical novel “A Winter in Mallorca.” Since 1981, music lovers can enjoy the Chopin Festival every year. Among its local festivities, around July 28th, the festival of Santa Catalina Thomas, native of the village and the only official saint of the Balearic Islands, is celebrated. The population is enchanting in its beauty and its landscape simply breathtaking. Located in the Tramuntana Mountains, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011, Valldemossa is ideal for hiking, climbing, and cycling. The Son Termes golf course is 10 minutes by car, and the Port of Valldemossa has a small dock and a beautiful pebble beach.
