On the evening of Christmas Eve , around 10 pm on the lakeside of Laveno, the appointment is with groups of divers and people from all over the lake, eager to witness this particular ceremony in procession from the church SS . Philip and James the baby Jesus is brought on the bank of the lake at the crib; it is carried in procession from the Church of SS. Philip and James, two married couples on the lake shore , where they proceed with the blessing of the priest.
Here, four divers pose the Child Jesus on a cot illuminated, then place it in the ” manger submerged ” , meanwhile the other divers are arranged in a circle with torches to set fire to a bonfire on the lake, as a good omen for Christmas and the new year 2014. As emerges from the icy waters of the lake a comet and a sparkling Christmas tree , people exchange smiles over the baby Jesus greeting ritual and heats up the good mulled wine, prepared every year by the “Friends of the Crib Submerged ” and served in the classic jug collection.
Since 2004, also at the center of the platforms, there is a fountain which , with its continuous jet , symbolizes the “new hope” always alive.
