Travel Tuesday: Denver

Denver is blessed with a peerless setting, perfectly posed at the point where the majestic Rocky Mountains give way to the sweeping High Plains. Yet the ‘Mile-High City’, so named for its elevation at exactly one mile above sea level, is not simply a gateway to the breathtaking scenery of the rural American West. This former mining town is now home to historic monuments, delicious local cuisine and a thriving theatre scene.

Travel Tuesday: DenverThe State Capitol

The gilded dome of the State Capitol competes with its national equivalent in terms of scale and grandeur. The nineteenth-century building’s design and interior, one of the finest interpretations of Neoclassicism in Colorado, is a chronicle of the city’s past. The gold leaf on the dome symbolises the town’s Gold Rush settlers, while a handwoven Women’s Tapestry inside commemorates the early female pioneers. The rotunda is adorned with murals by Allen True and poetry by State Laureate Thomas Hornsby Ferril honouring local businessman and philanthropist Charles Boettcher.

Performing Arts Complex

Denver’s Performing Arts Complex regularly hosts world-class Broadway touring productions, ballet, chorales and opera over eight theatres in one of America’s largest performance venues. Highlights for the festive period include Disney classic The Lion King, a musical adaptation of A Christmas Carol, and Murder for Two, a hilarious two-hander. Colorado’s own ballet company brings European fantasy to Denver with their masterful production of The Nutcracker.

Colorado gastronomy

Denver has made a name for itself as a destination for quintessentially American cuisine. Restaurants like The Broker give guests the chance to sample delicacies from across the United States, including Alaskan king crab legs, Colorado lamb and New England clam chowder. Root Down Denver is a chef-owned local favourite, serving sustainable, locally sourced treats such as Colorado ranch meatballs and burrata-stuffed heirloom tomatoes.

Skiing resorts

The city is renowned for its proximity to some of the world's finest skiing destinations: there are 25 resorts within the state limits. The exclusive ski resort of Aspen, accessed from the eponymous Victorian town by gondola or bus, has long cruising runs as well as challenging steep blacks. Howelsen is the oldest ski area in all Colorado; operational since 1915, it is now recognised as a ‘pioneer ski resort’. Comprising nine Nordic and 17 Alpine trails of varying difficulty, it has long been a base for Olympians-in-training.

The High Plains

The High Plains are the westernmost reach of the Great Plains, a starkly beautiful landscape extending from the Canadian prairies to the sun-baked banks of the Rio Grande. Hiking trails guide visitors on meandering tours through the region’s most scenic sites. Castlewood Canyon trail takes in the sparkling waters of Cherry Creek and panoramic vistas across the seemingly endless flatlands. Further afield, around a 90-minute drive from Denver, you'll find the Bluestem Prairie. This area is blissfully free of crowds, preserving it as a safe haven for herds of antelope, prairie dogs and several species of birds.

Denver’s extraordinary natural position and flourishing cultural scene have helped to build an exceptionally strong real estate market, with properties frequently selling above asking price within a few days of their listing. To invest in this exciting market, visit Engel & Vӧlkers online or travel to our Denver South office, where our expert agents will be delighted to assist with your search.
