Five mistakes to avoid in your new bedroom design

Whether as an oasis of calm, a sea of tranquillity, or a facilitator of a good night’s sleep, bedrooms play a major part in our lives – in fact, we all spend around a third of our lives there. However, they are often undervalued during home renovations and can be overlooked in favour of redecorating the living space or kitchen. To help you avoid this, here are the five most common interior design mistakes when redesigning a bedroom.

Velden am Wörthersee - Watch out for these five frequent mistakes when creating a new bedroom design. Here's how to steer clear of them:

1. Arranging the furniture awkwardly

The key to a new bedroom design is balance. When planning your furniture placement, you could refer to feng shui for spiritual and practical guidance. These ancient principles state that the bed should be in a position where you can see the door, but not too close to it, and that there should if possible be space to move all around it; this is called the ‘power position’. While this arrangement is said to improve the bedroom’s energy flow, it also has a more practical aspect: it means you and your partner can get in and out of bed effortlessly, without it becoming an obstacle course.

2. Forgetting about storage

The idea behind any new bedroom design is usually to make it more relaxing. Your space should be a rest area, even during the mid-week rush. Giving everything its own place will help with that. Think not only about a spacious wardrobe, with enough space for shoes, bags and coats, but also places for spare linen and cords and cables.

3. Not considering the light

It’s easy to forget about lighting in a room that spends most of its time in darkness, but you want to make sure you give yourself options. Ensure you have a light that’s bright enough to get ready by, a smaller task light for reading, and something dimmer or in a warm hue to radiate calm. You should also think about how you plan to block light. If you’re a light sleeper, you might like to consider heavy or black-out curtains; others might prefer a lightweight curtain so you can wake up with the dawn.

4. Choosing the wrong bedside table

While the style of your bedside table isn’t going to make or break your new bedroom design, its dimensions can make a surprising difference to your comfort. Choose a style that’s around the same height as the top of your mattress to make it easy to reach for things in the night.

5. Bringing work into the bedroom

Either for space reasons or for convenience, plenty of people add a desk into their bedroom. What you want to make sure, though, is not to have the desk dominate the space or be too close to or too visible from the bed – otherwise doing that ‘just one last thing for work’ will be on your mind as you try to wind down. Everyone deserves to delineate work and relaxation.
