After a walk through the dunes and a visit to the coastal boutiques, while taking in the great marine outdoors, you will have certainly worked up an appetite. A classic dish for food lovers is, of course, a delicious plate of fresh mussels, but when visiting Knokke-Heist it would be a shame to ignore the more refined, delicious and swanky restaurants the seaside has to offer. “Jardin” (formerly known as “Jardin Tropical”) is the renowned eatery run by Christophe Van den Berghe, which finds itself at the heart of a rich gourmet scene at the Belgian coast, dotted with plenty of stars. On offer is a bold fusion cuisine, which dares to revisit the best products the sea has to offer, such as lobster, in a new and inventive way. “Sel Gris”, run by promising young chef Frederik Deceuninck, is equally a must-visit for those who want to visit Knokke in style. Its surprising menu is largely dependent on seasonal produce and its wine cellar stocks roughly 400 bottles of mostly European origin. Its stylish decor and exceptional sea view are simply the icing on the cake. The cosmopolitan, contemporary and conceptual “Cuines 33” ventures where few other gourmet kitchens dare to follow.
Their tapas offer, for instance, is clearly Latin-inspired, but fits within a neat and passionate concept. Finally, do not miss “Bartholomeus”, a two star restaurant in Heist-aan-Zee, where the decoration beautifully matches the culinary creations on the plates, full of natural flavours. Fish and meat lovers will be equally delighted with the creative dishes on offer, packed with taste and local produce.
