Architectural Highlights: Older Building Charm and Art Nouveau

Architectural Highlights: Older Building Charm and Art NouveauThese days and especially in European capitals, classical older buildings are a sought after form of housing. The most lavish apartments with high ceilings, floor to ceiling windows, wooden floors and stucco coatings give off an individual sense of living.

The style goes back to the turn of the century and is considered to be a sign of European modernism. Either in the form of “art nouveau” in France or “Vienna Secession”, English “modern style” or Italian “floreale styles” - the architectural and artistic form found proponents all over Europe.  However, it was not a question of a closed trend but rather of a series of different movements within Europe.  The only thing that the representations have in common is their renunciation of historicism. Art nouveau became the dominating trend within a short time.

Stylistic features

Decorative facades, florals elements and hanging ornaments are among the characteristics that are turning up again in the art and architecture of the turn of the century. To this day, the “Secession Building” in Vienna, the “Mathildenhöhe Quarter” in Darmstadt and the “Sagrada Familia Basilica” in Barcelona are considered to be famous examples of this unique architecture. Typical of art nouveau is the claim to be considered a work of art i.e. facades, fittings, architecture and decoration are synchronised as much as possible.

Sense of living

Older buildings enjoy a lot of popularity due to their unique characteristic and furnishing. Brick walls and timber beam ceilings, box-type windows, contoured balconies and floorboards give off a special flair and make the hearts of inhabitant beat harder. Since interest in this form of housing is so great, new buildings are even being erected, in the meantime, in the typical old building style. Double doors and stucco are the highlights of this form of housing.
