There is a reason why "Het Eilandje" (literally: little island) district was named as such.
Indeed, this area of Antwerp is home to the town's oldest port and remains surrounded by water. Despite there now being very little port activity, "Het Eilandje" has kept an industrial feel which would delight any New-Yorker missing Brooklyn!
Trendy coffee shops can be found whilst passing museums such as the M.A.S or The Red Star Line Museum; this district is a great place to wonder around where the young people of Antwerp happily mix together. Many warehouses are now converted into spacious lofts or increasingly audacious concept stores.
FelixPakhuis is without doubt the best example of this as it combines both a small restaurant area and a covered market. The type of place filled with the locals who particularly like to spend time there on a rainy Sunday morning!
