In the middle of the Zoutelaan in Knokke, you can find the best waffles in the whole of Belgium.
Any lover of this lightly baked pastry dish, grilled between two metal plates, could tell you that. They can also point you in the right direction of this mythical tearoom that serves waffles in the shape of 5 hearts side by side and attracts hundreds of Belgian visitors each year.
Legend has it that, during a journey to Amsterdam, Mother Siska became intrigued by a painting that showed a waffle iron consisting of four heart-shaped moulds. Back home, she had a waffle iron with five hearts made, so she could feed each of her children in no time at all. But not only does this dessert put colour in the cheeks of the children, it also makes the heart of adults leap with joy and gives them comfort and enjoyment from the very first bite!
