A stroll along the Quais de l'Escaut, a breath of fresh air in the city centre

Het Steen, the oldest monument in the city of Antwerp, has had many uses: prison, fortress, home and finally a museum. Built in 900, in the central part of the quais de l'Escaut, halfway between the Noorderterrass and the Zuiderterras, it symbolises the birth of the city of Antwerp, so it is true to say that this section is most definitely steeped in history. Yet it was only during our century that Het Steen was to experience its heyday.

Indeed, l'Escaut has always served as a staging post between the different regions of the world and the city of Antwerp. The river has always played an important role in the life of the city, importing and exporting people, culture and products from the four corners of the world.

Today, Het Steen is experiencing a new lease of life with its interactive museum offering immersive experiences, a new cruise terminal and a panoramic view for visitors. At the museum, you will relive the finest hours of the city of Antwerp and this is where you will find a lot of practical information and inspiration for exploring the city. Het Steen is the ideal place to make preparations for an unforgettable stay in Antwerp.

The quais de l'Escaut then extend downstream and upstream from Het Steen and are ideal for lots of "green" walks, far away from the bustle and pollution of the city. This way you can get some fresh air and enjoy landscapes or activities that will make you forget the hustle and bustle of the city.

Recently redeveloped, the quays which were formerly used as a main highway or mooring point, have been changed and now look like wide openings onto the river, given their extended size and proximity to the water. Sightseers and dreamers are welcome, with a whole range of activities now being possible. The area is also beneficial for the organisers of numerous events bringing life to the quais de l'Escaut.

Certain parts of the quays, such as those to the south as well as those of the Scheldebocht (Coude du Fleuve) have already benefited from the planned transformation. So even when you are staying in Antwerp city centre, you can enjoy peace and quiet far away from the urban hustle and bustle and admire a magnificent sunset lying under a tree on the grass.
