Passing literally in front of many world-famous tourist destinations such as Athens, Florence or Riga, Dinant has risen to eleventh place in the 2019 ranking of the "European Best Destinations".
Thanks to its many assets - impressive architectural, cultural, outdoor and nature activities - and especially its breathtaking panoramic views, this electoral success will come as no surprise to those who voted for the town. Let's discover together the main highlights of this village on the banks of the Meuse where the living is easy.
Dinant is located on the Meuse in the Walloon Region of Namur, a 30-minute drive from the city. It is situated at the edge of the Ardennes Mountains, near the French border. As such, Dinant is an excellent starting point for exploring the Meuse Valley, one of the most picturesque roads in Belgium. However, there is a lot to see and do in the town itself, which should be on any trip to Belgium bucket list. Whether you're heading for a day trip from Brussels or for a weekend, Dinant is definitely worth a visit.
When you arrive for the first time in the Walloon city of Dinant, you cannot miss its main attraction. The citadel of Dinant stands above the houses below, literally emerging from the hill. Once at the top, you will face the best part of the whole experience: the view. The mist gives the landscape a crazy romanticism. On a clear day, the view is simply spectacular.
Nestled directly under the citadel, is the second most recognizable building in Dinant, the Notre-Dame collegiate church. This Gothic church, surmounted by its characteristic dome tower, was rebuilt after the original Romanesque church was crushed by the falling rocks.
Details of boat trips on the Meuse and other activities (such as boat rental and kayaking) are available at the Dinant tourist site. Discover its cave, where one can admire the natural magic shows of magnificent waterfalls and stalactites. Another star of the city: Adolphe Sax, the inventor of the saxophone, was born in Dinant in 1814. A special tourist trail entitled "Sax and the City" invites you to discover the musical and entertaining tribute of the city to its most famous musician.
