Hotspot of the week: De Haan Concession

Hotspot of the week: De Haan Concession.

On the territory of the two polders, namely Vlissegem (about 988) and Klemskerke (about 1003), De Haan is established. The hamlet, which counted only a few huts, was protected from the sea by a dune belt that also saved Klemskerke and Vlissegem from flooding. In the course of the 19th century, a large green dune forest developed in the area through various plantings. De Duinbossen De Haan is one of the green pearls on the coast. It consists of three parts and is no less then 152 hectares. Yoiu will find open dune landscapes with the typical flora and fauna of the coast ,extensive wooded dunes and surprising hiking trails. An ideal place for a healthy walking or a cycling trip. Children can also romp to their heart's content in one of the 3 playing zones.

In addition to its forest, beach and dunes, De Haan also has something unique to offer: an elegant, historic residential area called the Concession. Here, there are no high-buildings along straight streets, but villas along winding lanes, which meander trough a rolling green dune landscape. This is partly due to the construction according to the urban principles of Joseph Stüben. De Haan's urban development plan was designed by the London architect William Kidner, possibly at the request of King Leopold II. the monarch showed great interest in the development of the new villa park in the dunes. He came to visit now and then. On July 10, 1890, the king made a walk in De Haan in the afternoon where he paid particular attention to the planting and the recently built villas. Leopold II stayed for example in 1901 in the hôtel des Familles (actual Dunnepanne). Some sources mention the prince's plans to build a Villa himself in De Haan. In order to stimulate foreign toruism, in the dune massif west of De Haan, the king had the very first golf course in Belgium which he personally inaugurated on 1 July 1903. It is also well known that no one less then Athe dune massif west of De Haan, the king had then Albert Einstein lived for a period in the Concession.

In this region we as Engel & Völkers Brugge are also very active with a few unique offers in De Haan.
