Travel Diary: spend Valentine's Day in Ghent

This month, I'm going to take you to Ghent, one of the most romantic cities in our little Belgium, and the perfect place to celebrate Valentine's Day.

With its many bridges and river running through it, the city of Ghent is ideal for celebrating Valentine's Day. In the evening, its lighting makes it simultaneously mysterious and cosy. Enjoy a pleasant stroll before dining in one of Ghent's many restaurants before retiring to bed in an inviting hotel room.

A carriage ride to see the sights

There is no better way of introducing your valentine to the beauties of Ghent than by taking a carriage ride of thirty minutes duration. The tour starts at Emile Braunplein and passes the main monuments of the city. You could also opt for a boat ride on the Lys.

Take a break by Graslei docks

Whether you prefer to rest by the banks of the Lys or to sit at one of the many heated terraces, the spectacular views offered by the beautiful facades reflected in the river is the perfect setting for a romantic declaration. A short tour on the Saint Michel bridge will allow you to immortalise this moment with a selfie in a magical landscape integrating the main monuments of the city.

Ghent, a truly gastronomic city

Patershol is a popular historic district that has become trendy thanks to its many restaurants where all the cuisines of the world come together.
You can also tantalise the taste buds at a starred restaurant, such as Publiek, where the chefs, Flemish Foodie Olly Ceulenaere and Kelly Dehollander, serve quick and healthy lunches while the six-course menu will make you salivate with happiness. At Jan van den Bon, which has one Michelin star, the chef offers menus prepared from vegetables collected in the kitchen garden installed in the restaurant established in an old mansion.

A dream night in an 18th-century building

The Pilows Grand Hotel Reylof is housed in an old mansion that became a protected building in 1984. Its 158 rooms and suites are all uniquely well-appointed and have balconies, which is exceptional for a hotel located in the city centre. Its beautiful interior garden will welcome you for a moment or two of tranquillity, while you can enjoy the wellness centre equipped with a sauna, steam room, indoor pool and a gym. And why not treat yourself to a couples massage in this dream-like setting?
