The past few months, Waterwegen en Zeekanaal nv, which manages the waterways in Flanders, worked hard on the renovation of Brusselsepoortsluis – with great success, since the lock is opening two weeks ahead of schedule for leisure boats. From now on, water tourists can once again reach the Portus Ganda yacht marina via the Upper Scheldt (Bovenschelde).
The Celtic word ‘Ganda’ means ‘confluence’, and with good reason, since Ghent lies at the confluence of the rivers Scheldt and Lys. Moreover, rivers and canals have played a key role in the foundation and development of the city. Up to this day, water is key to tourism in the city.
Various boating companies organise daily guided boat tours through Ghent for both groups and individual tourists. Visitors who have their own boat will find the berths and yacht marinas in Ghent the perfect base for an exciting visit to the city.
