The E&V Guide to Moving

The E&V Guide to MovingMoving into a new property is always exciting, but it's also a major undertaking to pack up the life you've enjoyed in one house and reassemble it in another. At Engel & Völkers, we've acquired considerable experience of the complications that come with moving home, so we've put together a comprehensive checklist to ensure that everything runs smoothly for you.

Eight weeks before moving

Collect or contact – If you're planning on managing your move yourself, start stockpiling cardboard boxes, old newspapers, and other packing supplies. If you're utilising a specialised removal service, it's never too early to start researching, collecting quotes and vetting companies. If any acquaintances have recently moved, find out which company they used and their opinion of the service.

De-clutter – Take stock of everything you have in your home. Anything you no longer want should be sold, binned, or donated to charity before you start packing.

Evaluate – Find out exactly how much your prized possessions are worth before moving and check that you have the appropriate level of insurance in place. Heirlooms such as vintage furniture and antiques should be valued by an expert well before they're loaded into a van.

Inform – Formally inform your bank, employer and associated organisations of your new address in advance. Email or post change of address cards to all your friends and family members, letting them know the exact date you'll be moving. It's also worth arranging mail redirection for the first year after you move, as the occasional absent-minded moment is almost inevitable.

Two weeks before moving

Notify – Contact all your utility suppliers and tell them your moving date, so that they can arrange a final metre reading and, if necessary, give you a refund on pre-paid bills. If you’re happy with your broadband service provider, you may also want to book in a connection date at your new property.

Confirm – If you’re using a removal company, call to check that they have all the information they need. You should also speak to your real estate agent to arrange a time to pick up the keys to your new home.

Plan – If you're using a removal company, sketch out your new property’s floor plan to detail exactly where your furniture should go.

Back up – Unfortunately, possessions do sometimes get damaged during a move. If you have important files on your computer, back them up onto an external hard drive and bring it with you separately.

Start packing – Non-essential items like books, DVDs and artwork should be packed in advance, leaving you with less to do at the last minute.

The day before

Bring your valuables – Pack a personal box with important documents such as passports, birth certificates and title deeds and keep it with you throughout the move.

Record – Take a photograph of the gas and electricity metre so that you can challenge any discrepancies in your final bills.

Check – Complete a final walk-through of the house to ensure everything is packed away and as it should be.
