Locarno, with its 15,000 inhabitants, is nestled between Lake Maggiore and the southern Prealps. A few hours' drive separates the traveller from a holiday paradise that is second to none. The journey through the incomparable scenery of the Alpine passes alone is an experience in itself. In addition, the 5.5 km long Mappo - Morettina car tunnel, which connects Tenero directly with the centre of Locarno and considerably reduces traffic, was opened in 1996. The uniqueness of the region around Lake Maggiore is certainly due to the scenic beauty and the mild Mediterranean climate. Locarno is probably the climatically most favoured city in Switzerland. Almost 2300 hours of sunshine a year with an average temperature of 15.5°C allow flora and fauna to develop accordingly favourable. The mild Mediterranean climate favours an early spring, a long and hot summer with little precipitation and an autumn that lasts until November. Cultural highlights are the annual film festival in August and the music festivals in September and October.
