Josefov is the smallest city quarter with 8,81 hectares of land and is surrounded by the Old Town. Josefov is a part of Prague 1 and so is its administration. Until 1850, Josefov was called the Jewish Town. In 1850, Josefov received its current name, was legally connected to the city of Prague, and became the 5th city quarter. This quarter was named after Josef II, the son of Marie Terezie, who with his enlightened way of living gave the Jewish population the same rights as to the rest of the population. Among the famous historic sites belong the Jewish Townhall, the Old Jewish Cemetary, and 6 synagogs: Klausova, Maiselova, Pinkasova, Staronová, Španělská, and Vysoká.
