A Lovely Little Town: 8 Fun and Unique Things to Do in Albir

Located between the two busy towns of Benidorm and Altea, Albir is a  tranquil resort on the northern part of the world-famous Costa Blanca. Despite its size relative to Benidorm, Albir has a wealth of sights and experiences to tease the senses.

The town is easily accessible through the A7 motorway and by train and even lies in close proximity to two international airports: the Alicante International Airport to the south and the Valencia International Airport to the north.

In this article, we take a closer look at what Albir has to offer, and the top things to do in this charming little town by the coast.

1.  Enjoy the Crystal-Clear Waters and Clean Shores of Albir’s Beaches

Albir’s pristine beach is a place to enjoy the warm, temperate year-round climate. The town’s main beach is called the “Playa de Racó de l’Albir”—a 600-meter stretch that offers magnificent views of the Natural Park of Penyal d'Ifach in Calpe and the Altea bay. This beach is regularly awarded a Blue Flag, which means it is recognized for its clear waters and clean shores. Lifeguards are also present, and the beach has two play areas that small children can safely enjoy.

2.  Take a Stroll along the Promenade to Altea

One of Albir’s lovely features is its wide seafront promenade that stretches all the way to the next town of Altea. The walk may take roughly around 30-40 minutes and is a lovely way of viewing Albir’s seafront, while also being able to visit the charming town of Altea without the hassle of a bus or car. You can stop by many coffee shops on your way, and also visit around the marina located mid-way between the two towns. This is the ideal place to take photos of the coast which extends all the way to the town of Calpe.

3. Rich Roman History: Visit a Historic Villa

Right around the end of the 1st Century A.D., a new Roman town called Allon emerged in what is now present-day Villajoyosa. Albir was part of the town’s territory and was actually part of Allon’s countryside, where Romans lived in large Villas. A large necropolis from that period has been discovered in Albir, containing a mausoleum. This, then, has been preserved and made open to the public. You can visit the site and explore the villa and mausoleum free of charge, and you will even be offered a handheld tablet that provides more information on the various areas of the site.

4. Relax Under the Cool Shade of Eucalyptus Trees

Albir is home to a rather unusual park; one that offers a relaxing place to take a break, a stroll in the shade, and a place where the children can play. Eucalyptus Park is a relatively large nature park filled with old eucalyptus trees. These trees do not only provide shade, but also deter mosquitoes! The park features a children’s play area and is even the setting for Albir’s Fiesta which takes place in August, and from where there is a grand fireworks' finale every year.

5. Sip an Espresso or Cappuccino in Traditional Cafes along Peaceful Streets

Parts of Albir may be very modern, but it has lovingly retained many of its old Spanish traditional settings, and this can be seen through the various restaurants, bars, and cafes found close to each other in the town’s centre. Here you will find cafes with outdoor seats along the sidewalk, where in Summer you can enjoy the cool breeze from the sea. The wide tree-lined streets of Albir are also perfect for an evening stroll, or simply a place where you can watch the world go by as you sip some coffee with a friend.

6. Enjoy an Entertaining Evening at a Spanish Castle

Have a hearty dinner with family or friends and get entertained by a variety of shows at Castillo del Conde de Alfaz. Located on the outskirts of Albir, this establishment made to look like an actual castle is a medieval banquet-style restaurant and entertainment venue. Here you and your family or friends can eat an excellent “medieval” dinner while witnessing a jousting match, or a knights-on-horseback show. You can also visit the castle’s dungeons, and take photos with the knights before or after the show.

7. Walk Among the Stars in Albir’s Paseo

Inspired by the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Albir’s “Paseo de las Estrellas” or Stars Promenade, pays tribute to Spain's national stars by laying stones dedicated to them along the walkway. The town also holds an annual national film festival every July, when crowds of people gather in the Paseo to take photos and participate in the festival’s events.

8. Shop for Local Crafts and Artwork in the Market

During the summer months, stalls and shops are set up on the upper end of the seafront, creating a small market bustling with activity. Here you can purchase locally-made artwork and crafts, leather goods, and even jewellery. Shopping in this market is a relaxing experience, aided by the lapping of the waves and soft sea breeze while you peruse the various items on display.

If you prefer a place that is peaceful and with a lesser crowd, then you will find the town of Albir very appealing. The resort town is truly a Mediterranean paradise where you can relax and enjoy a flurry of activities whiles still basking in the town’s serene atmosphere.
